Quadratic Formula

The quadratic formula gives the solution to a quadratic equation and is written as:

x_{1,2}=\dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

where x_{1,2} specifies that this equation gives two solutions. One solution, x_1, uses the plus sign in the numerator. The other solution, x_2, uses the negative sign. As a quadratic equation, two solutions are required. This can be two real numbers. However, the solutions can also come from a “double” root in which one real solution counts for both. Additionally, the two roots could lie in the complex plane in which case they would be complex conjugates of each other.
